DR Congo health institute reports 4,336 Ebola deaths and 8,978 cases

Situation Overview

On 12 October, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo said the Ebola outbreak declared in May has reached 8,978 infections and 4,336 deaths. The INSP said the latest figures include 64 cases and 21 deaths in the previous 24 hours, for a case fatality rate of 48.3%. It reported 945 patients hospitalised or in isolation and 2,356 recoveries, and said contact-tracing coverage is at 81%. The outbreak is described as the deadliest in the country’s history and the second deadliest worldwide, with the next concrete update expected in subsequent INSP bulletins.

Geopolitical Implications

  1. 01

A worsening Ebola outbreak increases strain on national health capacity and can drive broader regional humanitarian and security pressures.

  2. 02

High mortality and ongoing transmission raise the likelihood of sustained emergency response operations and international coordination needs.
