HUMINT (Human Intelligence)

Definition

Human Intelligence (HUMINT) is intelligence gathered through interpersonal contact, including clandestine agents, diplomatic reporting, debriefings, and human sources within target organizations. HUMINT is the oldest form of intelligence collection and remains indispensable for understanding intentions, plans, and decision-making processes that technical collection methods cannot reveal. It involves recruiting, handling, and protecting human sources, often in hostile or denied environments. HUMINT operations carry significant risks including exposure of sources, diplomatic incidents, and ethical dilemmas. Despite advances in signals and cyber intelligence, HUMINT remains critical for counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and understanding opaque decision-making processes in authoritarian regimes.
