IPC warns El Niño drought and war push Sudan’s Darfur toward famine
Situation Overview
On 12 October, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) issued a food insecurity alert saying drought and conflict are pushing Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan toward famine in Sudan. The IPC said fresh evidence shows malnutrition worsening in several hotspots and that aid is not keeping up due to a severe lack of funding, insecurity and restricted access. It reported that in Eastern Jebel Marra, South Darfur, surveys in two displaced-person camps found acute malnutrition among children at 38% and 30.8%, above the famine threshold, with severe hunger and high death rates. Across Greater Darfur, 13 of 17 nutrition surveys conducted since January found critical levels of acute malnutrition, and in Nyala the share of children needing treatment for severe acute malnutrition rose from 5% in January to 11% by August. The IPC said drought now covers more than half of Sudan, compounding the impacts of conflict and displacement and reducing food availability while driving up prices and affecting livelihoods. The alert index is described as a global partnership that includes the UN emergency food agency WFP and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
