LiteLLM quarantines PyPI package after supply-chain attack leaks credentials
Situation Overview
LiteLLM disclosed that its release pipeline was compromised on 21 October 2026, enabling a malicious update of LiteLLM 1.107.0 to be pushed to Docker Hub and the Python Package Index (PyPI) at around 04:00. The compromised package delivered a credential stealer and a backdoor, and LiteLLM subsequently quarantined the affected package on PyPI. Security researchers including Upwind, SafeDep, Socket and StepSecurity reported that threat actors compromised multiple independent security controls to distribute the malicious version through PyPI wheels and Docker images. The incident matters for AI software supply chains because LiteLLM is used as an AI gateway component and the compromise targeted authentication and access. On 23 October 2026, reporting said the LiteLLM incident involved leaked passwords, following the earlier identification of the malicious code in the 1.107.0 supply-chain attack.
Geopolitical Implications
- 01
The incident highlights persistent targeting of AI software supply chains and the risk of credential theft enabling broader access to AI infrastructure.
- 02
Distribution through PyPI and Docker Hub shows systemic exposure across development and deployment ecosystems, increasing the likelihood of rapid downstream compromise.
