Russia strikes central Kyiv with Iskander missile carrying cluster warhead
Situation Overview
On the night of 22 October, Russian forces struck the central area of Kyiv with an Iskander ballistic missile carrying a K5 cluster warhead, Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhiy Flash Beskrestnov said on Facebook. Beskrestnov said the warhead explodes above ground and is designed to maximize destruction over an area of about 400 by 400 meters, with 58 bomblets detonating in the air. He added that the strike targeted part of Kyiv’s old city and aimed to injure as many people as possible rather than for military purposes. Ukrainian authorities reported consequences across six of Kyiv’s ten administrative districts, with one death and 24 injuries, including 16 hospitalizations. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched a combined overnight strike using Iskander-M/S and S-400/Zirco.
