UN warns Yemen’s Taiz humanitarian situation worsened after Houthi siege

Situation Overview

On 24 October, the UN warned that the humanitarian situation in Taiz, Yemen, has deteriorated after 20 days of siege imposed by Houthi forces. UN agencies said more than 800,000 people in the city lack access to humanitarian assistance, with access roads cut and very little fuel, food, or other essential supplies reaching Taiz since the siege began. Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said clashes prevent both the entry of aid and the population’s ability to leave the city. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimated that among those affected there are 600,000 people dependent on humanitarian assistance. The next concrete items reported are continued UN monitoring and warnings about access constraints caused by the siege and ongoing clashes in Taiz.

Geopolitical Implications

  1. 01

The Taiz siege and access breakdown increase pressure on conflict parties and humanitarian coordination.

  2. 02

Restrictions on food and fuel supply in a major Yemeni city heighten instability risks and deepen the humanitarian crisis.
