A ceasefire is a temporary or permanent halt to fighting between warring parties, negotiated or declared unilaterally. Ceasefires can be tactical (limited in scope and duration), operational (covering a broader area), or strategic (intended to lead to a permanent peace settlement). They may be monitored by international organizations, peacekeeping forces, or joint commissions. Ceasefires are fragile and frequently violated, as combatants may use the pause to regroup, resupply, or reposition forces. Sustained ceasefires often require confidence-building measures, demilitarized zones, and credible enforcement mechanisms to transition into lasting peace.
